Total Design

Bruce Benderson:
I believe that artists … should concern themselves with aesthetics in every area of life: the eye, the ear, the nose. They should be interested in perfume; they should be interested in design, in music. Artists should be like that, but very few are.
If we’re to believe Steve Jobs, great products are always triumphs of taste. If a designer’s professional ability is dependent on his having good taste — the output a direct reflection of that taste — it’s a curious thing that so many designers’ tastes do not transcend every aspect of their life. Many will do acclaimed work in the field of graphic design but profess to have no interest in other design disciplines, or take no pride in the tools they use, their workspace, or other things that they oversee the design of.
Massimo Vignelli wears only black and occupies these fantastic spaces; always fighting vulgarity, to borrow from the man himself. Whether or not that’s your taste , you can’t deny that everything is considered.
Addendum: Clothing is a great example of this. Say what you will about the fashion industry, but clothes themselves are great designed objects.
